Layflat Tutorial

Layflat is a low cost, easy to use supply line for irrigation systems. 

An ideal solution for distribution manifolds and transport lines. Layflat hose is constructed with 3-ply polyester yarns for strength and durability while providing resistance to twisting, punctures and leaks caused by abrasion and everyday use. It is durable enough for tough environments and a cost effective alternative to rigid PVC distribution and manifold piping.

Layflat tubing distributes water effectively across large fields. Their flexibility makes it simple to set up and move around, aiding our clients in maximizing water use and reducing waste. These hoses are also long-lasting and resistant to weather and UV rays, guaranteeing longevity.

Layflat is flat when not pressurized (hence its name); this means it not only takes up significantly less space when in storage, but it is easier and less expensive to transport compared to Oval Hose. Layflat tubing is an excellent way to get bigger sized supply lines shipped across the country. Designed for high flow and medium to low pressure applications.

Fittings

These fittings have a large flange that is inserted into the wall of the Layflat fitting; when pressurized this flange is pressed against the inside wall of the tubing to create a tight seal.

We carry fittings to connect drip tape for row crops or to connect solid poly tubing to create subheaders. 

To install teardrop fittings all that is needed is a Layflat cutting tool and a hex installation tool. These tools create a perfectly sized hole and allow for proper installation, respectively. The cutting tool and installation tool can be seen below:

Other common fittings, such as elbows, tees, couplings, adapters, plugs, and reducers, are shared with many of the same fittings used for Oval Hose. This makes locating compatible fittings easy and effortless

Step by Step

Step 1: Connect to the water source 

• Select a layflat adapter that matches your water source (e.g., a barbed to male threads adapter).
• Attach the adapter to your water source. For threaded connections, wrap Teflon tape around the threads before screwing it in. For barbed connections, use a clamp to secure the layflat tubing onto the barbed fitting.
• If the layflat is difficult to attach, use a food-grade lubricant like vegetable oil to help it slide on more easily. 

Step 2: Roll out and cut the layflat 

• Unroll the layflat tubing across the field to the desired location.
• Make a straight cut in the tubing with scissors or a cutter where you need to install fittings. A straight cut ensures a secure connection. 

Step 3: Install fittings 

• Use a punch tool to make a hole in the layflat, ideally on the crease or fold seam.
• Slightly unscrew a teardrop fitting to make it easier to install.
• Use a hex head tool to insert and screw the teardrop fitting into the punched hole, driving it in fully until it is snug.
• For a secure, leak-free connection, tighten the fitting with a clamp. 

Step 4: Cap the end 

• Place an end plug at the end of the layflat tubing.
• Use a clamp to secure the plug, tightening it with a screwdriver to ensure it is snug and leak-free. 

Applications

Layflat hoses are employed in numerous irrigation systems, each tailored to specific agricultural needs:

1. Drip Irrigation: Layflat hoses serve as the main supply lines, delivering water to drip lines or emitters that provide precise watering directly to the plant roots. This method conserves water and enhances crop yield.
2. Sprinkler Systems: Layflat hoses can transport water to sprinkler heads spread across the field. Their ability to handle high pressure ensures efficient water distribution over large areas.
3. Flood Irrigation: In flood irrigation, layflat hoses can quickly move large volumes of water to inundate fields. Their high flow capacity and durability make them ideal for this traditional yet effective irrigation method.
4. Fertigation: They can safely transport fertilizers and pesticides, ensuring they are evenly distributed across the fields without causing harm to the hose material.
